Furlough over the summer holidays?

The UK furlough scheme is currently due to run until the end of September 2021. Employers may well find that employees want to work flexibly over the forthcoming school summer holidays – and where that is operationally possible then it would be good employee relations practice to allow it given the times we currently live in. However, what is the current situation with the furlough scheme and what changes are afoot?

Employers can continue to pay 80% of pay until 30 June 2021. After this, the contribution will change. In July, employers must contribute 10% and the government will contribute 70%. Then, from 1 August 2021 to the current end of the scheme, employers will be required to contribute 20% with the government paying 60%.

Whether, as an employer, you choose to use flexible working practices, the furlough scheme or a combination to get through the long summer break – one thing is certain – agree your approach now to minimise disruption later.
